squatters welcome! come one, come all!
A new ruling came down in Italy the other day, stating that squatting is not a crime, if you are poor. So, basically, if you are an immigrant or italian, very poor/out of work, you can break in to any residence (any empty apartment or house) and live, free of charge (well, except for the person who actually owns the property, they are paying). Once you are there, they can't kick you out.
I have heard stories from Italians who know of someone who had a second home, and while away from one, found squatters in the other. And someone (Kim?) was telling me about an empty villa in Citta Alta, that had a squatter family that was there for years. They couldn't get rid of them, because they moved in while the family was away.
Now, I do think it would be a good idea to open up all of the abandoned/never occupied BRAND NEW buildings that are sitting around Italy and convert them to low income/subsidized housing. But seriously, legalized squatting...weird.
There are many people upset about this, especially those who do work, but can barely get by, and can't make ends meet. It makes some people want to give up, quit their job (or work only in black) and just squat for free.
So, anyway, if you have always wanted to move to Italy, now is the time. Don't worry about finding a job, or paying rent. Just pick an empty home, and move on in. (I would like to suggest the summer or winter homes of the politicians. They shouldn't mind.)

Oh my, and here I am literally staying up all night doing translations to afford life in Rome...
Nel mondo ci sono troppi furbi!
Grrrrr....
No hotels to rent next summer.
That is so absurd! Isn't that the same court that always hands down the most ridiculous rulings?
My husband's family had a squatter on their land (he began as a tenant but then stopped paying rent and began to present himself as the landlord) and it took them thirty years to get rid of him! All that time they had to pay taxes on land they couldn't use, and it was agricultural land, too, so they lost income from it!
Sometimes when I hear about stuff like this it makes me wonder what the point is in being honest and hardworking!
Thirty years! Are you kidding me! I just don't get how it can be legal to squat on someones land for 30 years! Especially while they are losing money because of it! I can't believe no one ever got shot! haha
There is a house (empty) we really like in the next town, maybe I should just go squat there for a while, then Franco can come live with me, once I can prove I am poor enough to stay there. HA
That's ridiculous. What is the purpose except to anger hardworking people?
Sometimes I really HATE the laws around here. We have renters and should they decide to stop paying rent, it is almost impossible to kick them out of OUR homes! Thank goodness this hasn't been a problem, yet.
On a side note, I LOVED the moive My name is Tanino and watched many times when it was on Sky.
Cyn
ps. When can we get together?
I guess it works in our favor though, Cyn. We are squatters! hahaah They can never get rid of us! waaa aaaaa aaaaa (evil laugh noise) hehe
Isn't Tanino cute! Were you so afraid the people would be mean to him! At least his biggest nightmare were the Italian Americans. haha
When you coming over to visit????? :O) I need a Cyndi fix. heeh
Let see, does anyone know who the judges are that made the rulings? Do they have summer and winter homes? Are some of them empty. It's a thought.
I am delurking because I enjoy this blog so much. Squatting is a similar problem in India. My friend from Bombay told me people will pay their family to move into houses or onto property even if they go on vacation (much less leave the country)so that squatters don't come in and take root. Apparently, once a squatter comes in, you are doomed...lawyers and court systems be damned. Strange, strange, strange.
Welcome Mrs. G! It is the most ridiculous thing! Moonsinger, I say we go find some fancy ass judge's house, and set up camp!
Mrs. G - I so wanted to find out you had a smack down with that idiot driver! hehe(not really, because that would be scary, but don't you HATE those people??) hehe
